Bikram yoga videosBikram yoga is somewhat of a misnomer. I'll explain in a moment. My name is Hoya, and I've been practicing Hatha yoga, Kundalini, and now Tibetan, for decades. I was asked by Yoga Videos to do a write-up about Bikram yoga. Bikram Choudhury re-popularized certain Hatha yoga positions, by putting together a sequence of 26 traditional Hatha yoga asanas. Bikram says these were originally given by Patanjali over 4000 years ago. Bikram yoga is also done in a hot environment, about 100 degrees F, which makes one sweat. Sweating has long been known for it's great health and spiritual benefits - from Scandinavian's and their saunas, to Native Americans and their sweat lodges. Thus, Bikram yoga is essentially Hatha yoga done in a hot environment, often an artificially heated room. We have a lot of requests for a Bikram yoga video, and would love to offer one. But there isn't one. Why? Good question. To me, anything that is greatly beneficial to health or spirit, should be made as broadly available to the public as possible. But allegedly, Bikram has not allowed any of his teachers to make a Bikram yoga video. At least, so I was told by a certified Bikram yoga teacher. I was also told that Choudhury is going to make one himself, sometime next year. I'm sure he has good reasons. But if they aren't careful, someone will release a Hatha video that uses the same postures in that order. For now, I have some alternative suggestions. One can order the Bikram yoga book, and/or get a Hatha yoga video, or Tibetan. Then just do it on hot days or in a heated room. The sweating aspect makes total sense as far as making Bikram yoga even healthier than others. But the postures are from Hatha roots after all, so Hatha is the original source, and Tibetan may be the source of all yogas. This link will take you to a list and chart of the 26 Hatha yoga poses Bikram has incorporated, in order.
